This course will provide veterinarians and veterinary technicians with an overall understanding of nutrition in veterinary medicine. Prerequisites

Participants must have a degree as one of the following;

  • Veterinarian - Proof of degree(s) and/or licens(s) must be provided.
  • Veterinary Technician - Proof of degree(s) and/or license(s) must be provided.
    • If your state does not requirement a degree to be a veterinary technician, a letter from your employer, who must be a D.V.M. or V.M.D. is required.  This letter must include
      • A statement that reflects that you work in the capacity of a veterinary technician
      • A list of your duties as a veterinary technician
  • Student in one of the above professions
    • You must have completed at least one year of your program before taking your first course
    • Successful completion of your degree is required prior to taking the certification exam
    • Proof of enrollment must be made available.

Module Descriptions:

NUTRITION CASE MANAGEMENT ONLINE PROGRAM, INTRODUCTORY MODULE:  Module length:  30 minutes
This module will introduct the importance of using the entire veterinary team to incorporate nutrition into daily practice.  Every patient can benefit from sound nutritional recommendations.  The veterinarian and pet owner's ability to provide single source nutrition gives a distinct advantage over human medical professional to prevent and treat diseases in pets.

Unit 1:  Nutrition as the 5th vital assessment
Unit 2:  The economics of nutrition in practice
Unit 3:  The technician's role in nutrition

NUTRITION MODULE I:  BASIC METABOLISM AND ENERGY REQUIREMENTS:  Module Length:  2 hours
This module will review basic metabolic concepts regarding energy expenditure and utilization.  Calculations of energy requriements based on age and lifestyle will be discussed with case examples.  Protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism and their modifications in the dog and cat will also be described.  Following comudle completion, one should be able to estimate the daily caloric needs of dogs and cats with varying lifestyles, understand how macronutrients are utilized for energy when post-prandial or fasting, become familiar with energy utilizationand regulation by individual organs.

NUTRITION MODULE II:  FEEDING HEALTY DOGS AND CATS:  Module Length:  2 hours
This module will discuss how to access body fat and muscle condition.  It will also describe how to intrepret pet food labels and discuss nutrient considerations for various ages and lifestyles.  The module will also describe manufacting practices to consider when evaluating companies.  It will then focus on nutritional considerations for different life stages.  After completion, participants should be able to assess a patient's need for nutritional intervention, gain confidence when choosing over the counter pet foods, and be able to make specific food and energy recommendations based ona pet's lifestage.

Module IIB:  Pet label regulation and interpretation
Module IIC:  Assessment of pet food manufacturing and quality control practices
Module IID:  Feeding for gestation and lactation
Module IIE:  Feeding puppies and kittens
Module IIF:  Feeding adult and geriatric dogs and cats
Module IIG:  Feeding working dogs

NUTRITION MODULE III:  NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF DISEASE:  Module length:  6 hours
Participants will learn how specific modifications to diet can aid int he treatment and prevention of various disease processes. After completion, participants should understand the concepts behind how and why diets are modified for certain diseases and strategies for when and how to implement changes.

Module IIID:  Nutritional management of gastrointestinal and pancreatic disease
Module IIIE:  Nutritional management of endocrine disease (hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus)
Module IIIF:  Nutritional management of liver disease
Module IIIG:  Nutritional management of lipid disorders
Module IIIH:  Nutritional management of osteoarthritis
Module IIII:  Nutritional management of skin disease
Module IIIJ:  Nutritional management of cardiac disease and cancer
Module IIIK:  Nutritional management of dental disease

NUTRITONAL MODULE IV:  NUTRITION FOR CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS:  Module Length:  1 hour
This module will emphasize the need for nutritional intervention in anorexic patients and describe the most appropriate techniques for assisted feeding.  Pictures and videos will be used to demonstrate feeding tube placement techniques.  After completion, participants should understand the risks associated with refeeding syndrome and aggressive feeding of sick patients, be able to choose appropriate methods for supplementation, and develope specific feeding plans based on specific patients needs.

NUTRITION MODULE V:  ALTERNATIVE DIET TRENDS:  Module Length:  1 hour
Owners are seeking better nutrition for their pets and alternative feeding methods have become popular in recent years.  This module will discuss the theories and evidence behind emerging diet trends.  It will also discuss the basics of evaluating and formulating a balanced homemade diet.

Module VA:  Homemade diets and their therapuetic uses
Module VB:  Raw food diets
Module VC:  Grain free and exotice protein diets
